The word ‘detox’ seems to have been popularized by companies claiming that you need to do it in order to lose weight.

This claim is followed by a specific product, diet, or tea you need to buy to help you get rid of toxins and be successful in your weight loss efforts.

Lucky for you, there’s no need to buy expensive teas because one of your body’s task is to eliminate toxins that would otherwise cause harm.

However, there are a few ways you can help make this process easier for your body.

In this article, I’ll go over 6 natural ways to detox your body for weight loss.

1. Limit Sugar and Highly-Processed Foods

Since sugary and highly-processed foods have little to no nutrients, they are often easy to overeat and lead to weight gain.

Eating too many sugary foods can cause fat to build up in the liver (fatty liver), which can cause inflammation and scarring and hinder liver function. (5, 6)

So consider swapping sugary and processed snacks for some fruits or vegetables to make your liver’s job easier.

If you absolutely have to snack, consider going for low-carb ones instead of sugary ones.

2. Eat More Sulfur-Rich Foods

Sulfur is known for helping your liver detoxify from environmental toxins, such as prescription drugs and pesticides.

Some foods are high in natural detox compounds, such as glutathione, chlorophyll, and sulfur, which help you get rid of toxins and impurities.

Some foods high in detox compounds including sulfur are:

  • broccoli
  • arugula
  • bok choy
  • onions
  • garlic
  • cabbage
  • cauliflower
  • kale
  • radish
  • collard greens
  • turnips

So consider having at least one serving of any of these at each meal.

Weight loss is much more than just following a strict diet, it’s about learning how to eat to maintain proper health.

That’s why I recommend people to learn about flexible dieting and the 80/20 rule for weight loss.

3. Limit Alcohol

I bet you didn’t see that one coming, huh?

While some studies (1, 2) have shown that occasional alcohol consumption can benefit heart health, excessive drinking is something to watch for.

Drinking too much can cause inflammation, scarring, and fat accumulation in your liver, which can ultimately hinder its function. (3)

While having a few drinks here and there is okay, and can, in fact, be beneficial for heart health, excessive drinking is something to watch for.

So how much can I drink?

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (4) recommends 1 alcoholic beverage for women and 2 for men per day.

4. Own a Liver

Luckily, a liver comes standard with our bodies. Awesome, right?

Here are a few functions of your liver:

  • blood detox and purification
  • disposing of cholesterol, hormones, and drugs
  • metabolizing macronutrients (protein, carbs, and fats)
  • storing glycogen

As you can see, one of its main functions is to help you detox your body from toxins and impurities.

5. Drink More Water

Many people drink water just for the sake of not being thirsty, however, water has many more important functions.

Your body is constantly breaking down, repairing, building, and disposing of old cells.

Water helps remove the waste left by this process through urination, sweating, and breathing, which would otherwise be harmful if kept in your body.

So consider drinking at least 1/2 ounce of liquid per pound of body weight.

For example, a 150 lb person should drink at least 75 ounces of liquids.

There are also several ways drinking more water can help you lose weight.

6. Be Mindful About What You Eat

Even if detox teas did work, there would be no point in drinking them if you kept eating the same sugary, fatty, and highly processed foods.

It’d be like your car having an oil leak, but instead of fixing it, you’d just keep pouring in more oil.

You don’t have to completely remove these foods from your diet as that can increase cravings and backfire, but you’d want to limit their intake.

The majority of your calories should come from nutrient-dense/whole foods.

That’s why I recommend people to adopt the 80/20 rule for weight loss.
